BHARATIYA VIDYA BHAVAN SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL, KODUNGANOOR, THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Kindergarten aims to create an environment where children can be safe, happy and motivated to learn. The teachers are there to listen and support the children. The kindergarten also wants to nurture an environment that is open, honest and warm. Children are always welcomed with open arms whenever they want a hug. The children should feel at home and secure while at the school. The kindergarten has three main values, which are listed and described below.
Every child is a pearl to us and they deserves high quality care and education
The teachers pay particular attention to each child’s individual needs. Each child is encouraged to fulfill their dreams and ambitions. All children develop at a different pace and it is important that, they receive personal attention and support. We know that building a secure self confidence takes place in the early years and therefore our experienced teachers encourage and support each child’s development.
Children have the right to play and have fun
Children learn most effectively when they are playing and having fun. Playing is also an integral part in a child’s physical, personal and social development. Therefore, our teaching is play-based and outdoor learning is highly valued. The kindergarten’s daily schedule allows plenty of time in the outdoors. During outdoor play, children have the freedom to yell and run and they are encouraged to be more enthusiastic and energetic. Outdoor play allows children to experience the world in which they live through sounds, textures, smells, and hands-on interaction. Exercise is the foundation for the child’s well being and it helps to promote a good healthy lifestyle. Outdoor play also allows the children to gain good control of their body which enhances a healthy self esteem. The kindergarten adopts an inclusive approach that promotes cooperation amongst the children. The teachers will carefully design activities that develop team working skills. The nursery encourages children to help others. Furthermore, tolerance for others and different cultures is encouraged. Children are taught to share and not leave others out of play.
Overview
Kindergarten programs should be appropriate for the age and developmental level of each child. Teaching is based on the knowledge of how young children develop and learn. The learning environment fosters all areas of development: intellectual, language, physical and social; and provides the challenge for children to learn according to their individual growth patterns.
Kindergarten programs:
We provide an environment, designed for the age group served and implemented with attention to the needs and differences of an individual children. Provide units or themes of interest which integrate and teach all areas of the core curriculum (e.g., language arts, mathematics, science, social studies, arts). Have a balance of classroom activities that are teacher-directed and child-initiated. These activities may be active or quiet, performed individually or in large and small groups. In a learning process which is active; the children interact with each other and materials while engaging in cooperative hands-on learning with day-to-day life experiences. Provide curriculum which builds upon what children already know and are able to enable them to connect new concepts and skills. Provide opportunities for exposure to a wide variety of information and literacy experiences and the use of technology through daily activities in the classroom or visual media room.
CREATIVE SKILLS:
Creative skills are developed by engaging children in activities by playing with dough, sand, water, blocks, creative stories, art, music, and a variety of other materials. The student will be encouraged to participate in activities that foster individual creativity. Develop and verbalize solutions to simple problems. Think of new uses for familiar materials.
LANGUAGE ARTS:
Young children begin to develop language, arts skills through the context of shared reading, shared writing. The student will apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, appreciate and respond to a wide variety of text and literature. Demonstrate correct book orientation by holding book correctly (right side up) and indicating where to begin (e.g., front to back, top to bottom, left to right). Identify the front cover, back cover, title of a book and author. Follow words from left to right and from top to bottom on the printed page. Distinguish letters from words. Recognize and name all capital and lower case letters of the alphabet.
